Posted in Late Night Talk Shows with tags David Letterman on May 21, 2015 by Rich WilkinsLast night was David Letterman’s last show. It was his last show in a career that outlasts the length of my life, with him going starting on late night television in 1982, and continuing a glorious run that is only now over.
The final episode itself was absolutely epic. The show concluded with the Foo Fighters playing “Everlong” while a video of great moments from his show’s history played for the television crowd. It began with “the Presidents’ club” all saying our long national nightmare had ended, and then Dave asking President Obama if he were joking. In between was a great opening stand-up, a star-studded top ten, and lots of flash backs throughout his career. It was a very well put together, funny show.
I’m a Stephen Colbert fan, and I’m excited to see what he does with the show. With that said, there won’t be another David Letterman, just as there wouldn’t be another Johnny Carson, or Ed Sullivan, or any of these legendary late night stand-up comics. David Letterman was the man who made the 12:30 time-slot a viable position to be in for major comics. His run in the 11:30 time-slot was also epically ground-breaking, as was his decision to renovate and bring back the Ed Sullivan theatre. For me, David Letterman (an Indiana boy at heart) was a real part of the fabric of Manhattan, with his famous studio and presence there. I’ll miss his opening monologue and his regular features, such as “Stupid Pet Tricks.” The guy is an epic legend, and late night TV won’t be the same without him.
