The GOP Primary Descends Into a Freak Show

Ending birthright citizenship. Calling for a new invasion of Iraq. Making a ten year old carry her rapist’s child to full-term.

Just another day in the GOP Primary.

Four years ago, the GOP pushed Mitt Romney further and further right throughout their primaries, forcing him to renounce previous positions on immigration and health care, and adopt further more conservative ones. In that narrative, it was Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, and others pushing him right. The 2016 Republican nominee is being pushed right by Donald Trump on immigration, Mike Huckabee on abortion, and even Lindsey Graham on foreign policy. Even now, more “serious” candidates like Scott Walker are embracing some of these crazy positions.

Xenophobia, religious zealotry, and war aren’t going to win the GOP the 2016 election. That is clear. There just aren’t enough people not touched by these positions to win a national election. These positions are convenient though to candidates who don’t have to care much about actually winning the election. Much as in 2012, we are seeing this ridiculous behavior and outlandish set of values take hold of the electorate. As someone who doesn’t want a Republican President in 2017, I am very happy to see the GOP repeat the sins of it’s past.
