Presidential Campaigns are not a Horserace

A lot has been written about Donald Trump, and his lead in the national polls. It’s important to know that polls are just a snapshot in time, a glimpse at a moment. It shows how Donald Trump is doing right now, and he’s doing very good.

The problem with that is there’s no election right now. There won’t be one until next year. The only time polls will matter is right before that vote, and then obviously on the day of the early primaries and caucuses. The current snapshot means nothing.

My main point here is that campaigns should not change their strategy and direction because of polling right now. Polls are a good guide to create a plan and a message, but polls meant to create a storyline narrative throughout the campaign aren’t something a serious campaign should change their plan over.
