Old, Uninformed Conservatives Don’t Support the Iran Deal- Shocker

You can’t win them all over….

A new CNN Poll says only 44% of the public wants the Iran Deal to get Congressional support, while 52% want it rejected. Inside of that poll:

The new poll finds a sharp partisan gap on whether Congress should approve the deal, with 66% of Republicans and 55% of independents saying Congress ought to reject it and 61% of Democrats saying it should be approved. Younger adults, who tend to lean more Democratic, are more apt to favor the deal: 53% of those age 18-34 say approve it, while 56% of those age 35 or older say reject it. There is also an education divide on the deal, with 53% of college graduates saying the deal should be approved, while just 37% of those with a high school degree or less formal education saying they think it should be approved.

So Republicans don’t support it. Older people don’t support it. People with less formal education don’t support it. Previous polling also suggests that a lot of people don’t really disapprove of the deal on content, they just don’t trust Iran, something that would be a characteristic of, yes, old people who lived through 1979.

Democrats absolutely should take the poll as a reason to support the President though. First off, his own approval is 49/47 in the poll, in positive territory. Second off, younger people, college educated people, and Democratic voters support it, or most of the people who are going to vote for them. Finally, the people most likely to vote based on this issue alone, support the President’s deal with Iran:

The LA Jewish Journal survey released Thursday found that 48 percent of Jews support the deal while 28 percent oppose it and 25 percent hadn’t heard enough to form an opinion. The survey described key parts of the deal, which lifts major economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for Iran restricting its nuclear program in a way that makes it harder for it to produce nuclear weapons.

Jewish support for the deal was 20 percentage points higher than for Americans overall, according to a side-by-side poll of the general public. A separate question found 54 percent of Jews saying Congress should approve the deal, while 35 percent want Congress to block it. Both polls were conducted by telephone in the week after the deal was announced among 500 respondents each. (See below for more methodological details.)

What that means, in basic terms, is that old, white Christians don’t want a deal with Iran in nearly unanimous terms, and guess what? So what? Democrats get an ever decreasing share of their votes anyway, and they’re wrong on this issue. Not accepting this deal means either giving Iran a nuclear bomb or going to war. I bet if we polled “war with Iran,” a lot of these same people who disapprove of the deal would say no to that too. Their position is misinformed nonsense, and they probably won’t be moved by arguments on the merits. There’s no good reason for Democrats to be overly moved by them, or Netanyahu’s arguments.
