The Improved Product in Allentown

I sat through a day game in Allentown today, another victory for the IronPigs. The Pigs won 5-1 on this day, beating Detroit’s affiliate, Toledo.

The IronPigs are 43-54 on the season, still well out of the playoff picture, but at one point this season they were on pace to match the inaugural team’s record for futility. The team has been an above .500 team for the last month, and seems to be clicking on all cylinders now. Brian Bogusevic has been their MVP this season, and he’s back. Chase d’Arnaud has been a solid starter. The addition of Erik Kratz to catch isn’t hurting them at all now. In-season call-ups Gabriel Lino, Aaron Altherr, Anthony Velasquez, and Jesse Biddle have all been real helps. Part-time major leaguers Aaron Nola, Severino Gonzalez, Adam Morgan, and David Buchanan have all contributed here. Guys like Adam Loewen and Juan Gutierrez have shown up and helped in the bullpen. The team on the field has little to nothing in common with the opening day dumpster-fire that was on the field.

Obviously this can change quickly. A big trading deadline could force the Phillies to call lots of these guys up, in which case this team could get bad again. In the meanwhile, I’ll enjoy watching an improved team win games. Who knows, in 2016 we could be watching a lot of Reading and Clearwater’s talented squads.
